Islands in the Sky District<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Islands in the Sky District<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Closest to Moab<\/li><li>Many overlooks a short walk from parking lots<\/li><li>Numerous other attractions are a short walk\/hike.<\/li><li><strong>White Rim<\/strong><ul><li><strong>\u2018<\/strong>Halfway\u2019 down the canyon from top to Colorado River.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Follows rim of the canyon.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Accessible by permit only.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Navtec 4&#215;4 White Rim Tour is excellent \u2013 if you do this, do it before visiting the top as then you\u2019ll have an idea of what you are looking at an where you\u2019ve been.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Shafer Trail Overlook<\/strong><ul><li>Watch the vehicles go up\/down the crazy switchbacks in to the canyon.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Part of Navtec 4&#215;4 White Rim Tour<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Mesa Arch<\/strong><ul><li>Must see<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Get their early morning for best view as distant mountains are lit and framed by the arch.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Small area, will get crazy busy during day.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Upheaval Dome\/Syncline Trail<\/strong><ul><li>Crater impact site<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Colorful geology<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Grand View Point<\/strong><ul><li>Probably the best view in the park.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Probably better lighting in later afternoon, or if storms are to the east.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>A ponderous and enormous view of the canyon and geology.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Grand View Point Overlook<\/strong><ul><li>Easy hike\/walk to this gorgeous overlook.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Highly recommended.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Green River Overlook<\/strong><ul><li>Not a shabby overlook either.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jeffasman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/20190502_164050_7D2_8260.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2529\" width=\"750\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jeffasman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/20190502_164050_7D2_8260.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/jeffasman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/20190502_164050_7D2_8260-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption>The Needles District<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Needles District<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mainly an area for gorgeous hiking and backcountry 4x4ing.<\/li><li>Some gorgeous \u2018Cars\u2019 movie like scenery (mesas?) on Bureau of Land Management land on drive to this section.<\/li><li>It is gorgeous later in the day because you are driving out with the sun at your back and it lights up the buttes and mesas as you drive out.<\/li><li>We hiked six miles from Elephant Hill toward Chesler Park.&nbsp; The terrain and geology is very foreign looking and boggling.&nbsp; We didn\u2019t make it to the best part, Chesler Park.&nbsp; I highly recommend this (but there are many different routes to choose from.)<\/li><li>The road from the campground to Elephant Hill is gravel and dirt, but it was easy passable in a car when dry.&nbsp; I wouldn\u2019t try it in a car when wet.&nbsp; This section alone is worth the drive if you don\u2019t have time to hike because it weaves through the ridges.<\/li><li>Drive from Moab is easy on good road with low traffic.  Most is not overly scenic.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"itinerary-suggestions\">Itinerary Suggestions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Islands In The Sky District Day Tour <\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 roughly in this order<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mesa Arch \u2013 short walk\/hike, morning<\/li><li>Upheaval Dome \u2013 short uphill (or as long as you want) hike<\/li><li>Green River Overlook \u2013 short walk<\/li><li>Grand View Point \u2013 short walk<\/li><li>Grand View Point Overlook \u2013 short walk\/hike<\/li><li>Shafer Trail Overlook \u2013 very short walk<\/li><li>Dead Horse State Park \u2013 short walk, sunset<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"links\">Links<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/cany\/index.htm\">Canyonlands National Pa<\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/cany\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">rk<\/a> &#8211; National Park Service<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/navtec.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Navtec Expeditions<\/a> &#8211; 4&#215;4 tours<\/p>\n<h3>Related Images:<\/h3>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Overview Areas Itinerary Suggestions Links Overview Enormous, gorgeous, and underrated big time.&nbsp; We spent about three days here.
